I worked on World X Recipe on team BYTE.bak for Global Game Jam 2025. The team was awesome, and I’m super proud of what we were able to achieve in 48 hours! It was my first game jam, and it was an incredible experience. I learned a lot about rapid development, and I got to develop a variety of game mechanics.

Here’s some showcases of the game throughout its development using gifs of our Discord! πŸ˜„

Part 1: Early Development

As expected, the game looks pretty barebones as we experiment with gameplay.

The game jam’s theme this year was “bubbles.” We decided to have an alien UFO abducting objectives by capturing them in bubbles.

We decided to have 3 different objective types:

  • Basic: Flour Crates
  • Growing: Wheat, eggs
  • Moving: Cows, chickens

The cows would eat the wheat as it grows, and the crates would be destroyed by wheat. After making some prototypes, I got some feedback from designers to add some particles. I already had experience with Unity’s particle system due to my destruction system projects (check out my most recent showcase hereπŸ”—), so I quickly made some satisfying eating and destruction particles.

Part 2: So Pretty!!!

We got a proper art pass! πŸ˜„

By this point, I’d finished creating the objective system: The 4 squares at the bottom of the screen that fill up as you gathered ingredients. I used ScriptableObjects to serialize the quest information, allowing us to randomly pick from a variety of quests upon quest completion. I also quickly made some confetti to celebrate completing all objectives because that’s fun. 😊

The artists prepared the hand models with some animation capabilities! I hooked that up to the input system, and I used linear interpolation to have the position/rotation of the hands update smoothly. You can see us get very excited about how it came out:

Aaaaand, a little more particle system fun: Making the space debris cause little explosions upon impact. πŸ˜„

Part 3: ️‍πŸ”₯ OH NOOOOOOOOO ️‍πŸ”₯

THE SUBMISSION WEBSITE IS DOWN!!!

As we neared the submission deadline, we fixed bugs, polished the game up a little more, and prepared for submission!

Wait, what happened to the submission website? 😨

Oh no

Oh no it’s been down for several hours

Phew!

Okay, we’re fine!

Part 4: We Did It! πŸ˜„

Some analytics from the itch.io page:

We even got featured on DigiPen’s Facebook page!

And people seemed to like the alien πŸ™‚

Global Game Jam 2025 was so much fun: I got to work with an awesome team, make an incredible game, and even got to experience the panic of the submission website going down! πŸ˜›

10/10, would jam again. πŸ˜„
